🚗 RN7 Madagascar Itinerary 2026: Day-by-Day Guide with Anja and Isalo

From Antananarivo to Toliara, the RN7 is Madagascar’s iconic southern route. This 2026 guide details the best day-by-day itinerary, realistic travel times, Anja Community Reserve, Isalo and the smartest stop near Ambalavao.

What is the best RN7 Madagascar itinerary?

The answer depends on your pace, your priorities and the time you have available. But for most travellers, one route makes the most sense: travelling gradually from Antananarivo to Toliara, without turning the journey into a race against time.

The RN7 in Madagascar is not a highway. It is the great southern road, descending from the Highlands towards the rocky landscapes of Isalo, then towards the ocean in Toliara, also known as Tulear. Along the way, it crosses terraced rice fields, lively villages, highland towns, granite mountains, wide open plateaus and drier landscapes as you approach the south-west.

In 2026, several sections of the RN7 are undergoing improvements, rehabilitation or roadworks. Travel times may therefore vary depending on the season, traffic, stops, road conditions and the progress of works on each section. This guide offers a realistic RN7 Madagascar itinerary, designed for travellers who want to discover Madagascar without being exhausted by the road.

The RN7 rewards good planning. Poorly organised, it becomes a series of very early departures, long hours in the car and rushed dinners. Well planned, it becomes one of the most memorable journeys in Madagascar.

Among all the stops along the way, Ambalavao and Anja Community Reserve deserve special attention. Located between Fianarantsoa and Isalo, this stop allows you to see ring-tailed lemurs, break the journey before Ranohira and enjoy a real moment of rest before the spectacular landscapes of southern Madagascar.

🧭 Quick overview of the recommended itinerary

  • Day 1: Antananarivo → Antsirabe
  • Day 2: Antsirabe → Ambositra → Fianarantsoa
  • Day 3: Fianarantsoa → Ranomafana or Ambalavao
  • Day 4: Ambalavao → Anja Community Reserve
  • Day 5: Ambalavao → Ranohira / Isalo
  • Day 6: Ranohira → Toliara

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience the RN7 in a coherent and comfortable way, with useful stops, realistic travel times and a natural progression towards the south.

🛣️ Before you go: direction and travel pace

North to south or south to north: which direction is best?

Most travellers start their RN7 itinerary in Antananarivo and travel south. This is the most logical direction for several reasons.

First, most international flights arrive in Antananarivo. Second, the progression of landscapes works very well in this direction: the Highlands, rice fields, highland towns, granite mountains, Isalo, then the dry south-west and the ocean.

Travelling the RN7 in the opposite direction, from Toliara to Antananarivo, is possible. However, it often requires more logistical planning, especially with domestic flights, driver availability and the return to the capital.

How many days do you need for the RN7 Madagascar?

There are three main travel rhythms.

In 5 to 6 days, the itinerary is possible, but it remains quite dense. You need to choose your stops carefully, avoid unnecessary detours and accept longer road days.

In 7 to 8 days, the trip becomes more comfortable. This pace allows you to include Ranomafana, take some time in Fianarantsoa, visit Anja without rushing and reach Isalo in better condition.

In 10 days or more, the RN7 becomes a true slow travel experience. You can stop in markets, extend certain stages, add Tsaranoro, Andringitra or continue towards Ifaty.

For a first trip, the best balance is often 6 to 8 days between Antananarivo and Toliara

📍 Day 1: Antananarivo to Antsirabe, leave Tana early

Leaving Antananarivo often takes longer than expected. Traffic can be heavy, especially in the morning around the capital. To avoid losing a large part of the day, it is better to leave your accommodation early, before congestion becomes too heavy.

Once outside the city, the road gradually opens onto the Highlands: hills, rice fields, villages, red-brick houses and agricultural landscapes. The distance between Antananarivo and Antsirabe is around 170 km, but on the RN7, you should think in real travel time, not only in kilometres.

In 2026, the Antananarivo–Ambatolampy–Antsirabe axis has seen improvements on several sections, but it is still wise to allow extra time. Depending on traffic, stops and road conditions, the journey usually takes around 4 to 5 hours.

Driving at night on the RN7 is strongly discouraged. Visibility is limited, some vehicles may have poor lighting, and pedestrians, carts or zebu can be present on the road.

Is Antsirabe worth a stop?

Antsirabe is a pleasant first overnight stop. It is not necessarily the most spectacular moment of the journey, but it allows you to leave Tana, settle into the rhythm of the RN7 and start the southbound journey without excessive fatigue.

The town is known for its pousse-pousse, craft workshops, semi-precious stones and calmer atmosphere compared with the capital. If you have time, Lake Tritriva can be an interesting excursion around Antsirabe.

For most travellers, one night is enough. The goal is to leave rested the next morning towards Ambositra and Fianarantsoa.

🪵 Day 2: Antsirabe, Ambositra, Fianarantsoa, deeper into the Highlands

The Antsirabe–Ambositra section is one of the pleasant parts of the RN7. The landscapes remain green, hilly and very representative of Madagascar’s Highlands.

Ambositra is known for wood carving, sculpture and marquetry. It is a useful stop for lunch, visiting a few workshops and buying light souvenirs, especially if you are looking for local craftsmanship rather than standard tourist products.

After Ambositra, the road continues towards Fianarantsoa. Even when certain sections are improved, the relief, curves, village crossings and stops mean that the journey often takes longer than the distance suggests.

Fianarantsoa deserves a real pause. Its old upper town, narrow streets, university atmosphere and historical importance in the Highlands make it more interesting than a simple technical stop.

If your schedule allows, you can also explore local vineyards or ask about the FCE train towards Manakara. However, this option requires time and does not fit every itinerary

🌿 Day 3: Ranomafana or Ambalavao, the strategic choice

From Fianarantsoa, travellers generally have two main options.

The first option is to make the detour to Ranomafana. The national park is one of Madagascar’s major biodiversity sites, with spectacular rainforest, lemurs, birds, amphibians and a completely different atmosphere from the dry south.

However, Ranomafana requires time. It should not be treated as a quick roadside stop. To make the visit worthwhile, plan at least several hours on site, ideally with an overnight stay or a well-organised half-day.

The second option is to continue towards Ambalavao. This choice is especially logical if you have a tighter itinerary or if you want to prioritise Anja Community Reserve, Isalo and more comfortable travel stages.

Fianarantsoa and Ambalavao are separated by about 55 km on the RN7. The journey can take around 2 hours depending on road conditions, works and the situation on the day.

Choosing Ambalavao on this day allows you to arrive early enough to visit Anja Community Reserve, settle in without stress and prepare calmly for the longer road stage towards Ranohira the next day.

For a shorter itinerary, this is often the smartest decision

🐒 Day 4: Ambalavao, the stop that changes the journey

Ambalavao is one of the most strategic stops on the RN7. The town marks a transition between the Highlands and the deep south. The landscapes become more mineral, the granite mountains come closer, and the atmosphere changes clearly before the descent towards Isalo.

The main reason to stop here is Anja Community Reserve. Located near Ambalavao, it is one of the most accessible and memorable experiences on the RN7.

Anja Reserve is known for its ring-tailed lemurs, recognisable by their black-and-white striped tails. In good conditions, observation is often easier than in many other sites, as the groups move through an open environment of granite rocks, dry forest and accessible trails.

Unlike some more demanding parks, Anja does not necessarily require a long or difficult hike. Depending on your pace, the visit can take around 2 to 4 hours. This makes it an ideal stop for travellers who want a real encounter with Madagascar’s wildlife without dedicating an entire day to it.

Where to stay in Ambalavao near Anja Reserve?

Your choice of accommodation in Ambalavao has a direct impact on the quality of the trip. At this stage of the RN7, many travellers are already tired after several days on the road. A good night, a good dinner and a location directly near the reserve make a real difference.

The Anja Reserve Lodge & Restaurant is located at the entrance of Anja Community Reserve, near Ambalavao, on the RN7. The lodge offers five Signature Suites facing the granite mountains, with private terraces, a peaceful atmosphere, high-quality bedding and direct immersion in the landscape of Anja.

The point is not only to sleep near the reserve. It is to transform a road stop into a genuine travel experience: arrive, slow down, enjoy the view, dine on site, then visit Anja without rushing.

The lodge restaurant serves refined French-inspired cuisine, prepared by an experienced team. After several days on the road, this matters: eating well, sleeping well and leaving the next morning in good condition towards Isalo.

In 2026, The Anja Reserve Lodge was officially recognised among the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best, ranked No. 14 in the B&Bs and Inns category for Africa. This distinction confirms the quality of the guest experience at this stage of the RN7.

With only five suites, capacity is deliberately limited. During high season, it is strongly recommended to book in advance, especially if your itinerary includes a specific stop between Fianarantsoa, Ambalavao, Anja and Ranohira.

You can discover our Signature Suites facing Anja Reserve or contact The Anja Reserve Lodge & Restaurant directly to check availability.

Why this stop improves the entire RN7 itinerary

Sleeping in Ambalavao near Anja helps avoid two common mistakes.

The first mistake is visiting Anja too quickly, between two long road sections. You may see the lemurs, but you do not really experience the place.

The second mistake is leaving too late for Ranohira. The road towards Isalo is beautiful, but it is better enjoyed without excessive fatigue.

By planning a real overnight stop at Anja, the itinerary becomes smoother. You visit the reserve in better conditions, enjoy comfortable accommodation, then leave rested towards Ranohira and Isalo National Park.

This is exactly the kind of decision that turns a decent RN7 circuit into a truly memorable journey.

🏜️ Day 5: Ambalavao to Ranohira, gateway to Isalo

After Ambalavao, the landscape gradually changes. The relief opens up, vegetation becomes sparser and the road takes on a wider, more dramatic character.

The journey towards Ranohira crosses the Horombe Plateau, one of the great visual moments of the RN7. The landscapes are vast, golden and almost silent. The light changes throughout the day, and this section often feels like entering another Madagascar.

The distance between Ambalavao and Ranohira is significant, but this stage is generally much easier if you slept near Anja the night before. Departure is simpler, the pace is more comfortable, and arrival in Ranohira is less tiring.

Ranohira is the gateway to Isalo National Park. Canyons, natural pools, rock formations and landscapes shaped by erosion make Isalo one of the most iconic sites in southern Madagascar.

It is strongly recommended to sleep in Ranohira and visit the park the next day, rather than trying to do everything in a single day.

. 🌊 Day 6: Ranohira to Toliara, down towards the ocean

The RN7 does not end at Isalo. For many travellers, the final point is Toliara, also known as Tulear, where domestic flights to Antananarivo depart and where extensions towards Ifaty, Anakao and the south-west coast begin.

The Ranohira–Toliara journey crosses increasingly dry landscapes. You gradually enter the world of south-western Madagascar: spiny vegetation, baobabs, more scattered villages, warmer light and the feeling of approaching the ocean.

In 2026, some sections between Sakaraha and Toliara may be affected by works, slow traffic or changing road conditions. It is therefore better to allow extra time, especially if you have a flight to catch.

The rule is simple: do not plan this final stage too tightly. If your return flight leaves from Toliara, aim to arrive the day before.

In Toliara, many travellers extend the circuit to Ifaty to end the journey on the beach, after several days of roads, mountains, parks and inland landscapes.

✅ Best RN7 Madagascar itinerary in 6 days

For a balanced 6-day itinerary, the following programme is the most coherent:

  • Day 1: Antananarivo → Antsirabe
  • Day 2: Antsirabe → Ambositra → Fianarantsoa
  • Day 3: Fianarantsoa → Ambalavao → Anja Community Reserve
  • Day 4: Ambalavao → Ranohira
  • Day 5: Isalo National Park
  • Day 6: Ranohira → Toliara

This programme avoids overloading the days while including the essential stages: the Highlands, Fianarantsoa, Ambalavao, Anja Community Reserve, Isalo and Toliara.

If you want to include Ranomafana, it is better to choose a 7- or 8-day itinerary.

✅ Best RN7 Madagascar itinerary in 8 days

For a more comfortable journey, this is a stronger version:

  • Day 1: Antananarivo → Antsirabe
  • Day 2: Antsirabe → Ambositra → Fianarantsoa
  • Day 3: Fianarantsoa → Ranomafana
  • Day 4: Ranomafana → Fianarantsoa or Ambalavao
  • Day 5: Ambalavao → Anja Community Reserve
  • Day 6: Ambalavao → Ranohira
  • Day 7: Isalo National Park
  • Day 8: Ranohira → Toliara

This version is better suited to travellers who want to include rainforest, take time to observe wildlife and avoid the feeling of always leaving too quickly.

In this programme, Ambalavao remains a key stop because it creates a natural pause between Ranomafana and Isalo.

💡 What the RN7 teaches about travelling in Madagascar

The RN7 is not just a road you cross. It is a road you inhabit for a few days.

It forces you to slow down, look around, accept real distances and understand that Madagascar is not a standardised travel destination. Kilometres matter, but rhythm matters even more.

The most famous stops are not always the only ones that stay in your memory. Ranomafana impresses with its rainforest. Isalo impresses with its landscapes. But Anja often remains unforgettable because it offers a direct, accessible and powerful encounter with ring-tailed lemurs, granite mountains and a local community involved in protecting the site.

This is also where the choice of accommodation becomes important. A good stop is not only a place to sleep. It improves the entire journey.

If you are preparing an RN7 itinerary between Antananarivo, Fianarantsoa, Ambalavao, Anja, Isalo and Toliara, consider booking your Ambalavao stop in advance. With only five Signature Suites, The Anja Reserve Lodge & Restaurant is not a large transit hotel: it is a confidential address designed for travellers who want to give more value to their RN7 journey.
